Everett Mayo aka lord of the wood

Everett is a former heavyweight boxing champion for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Born and raised in Roanoke, VA, he was a first rate athlete, excelling in many sports. He began boxing while in the U.S. Army and was headed for a promising career when a construction accident left him legally blind in one eye. His boxing career over, he allowed his long time love of art to emerge, channeling his creative energies toward sculptures.

A show of painted animals at the MABEY GALLERY in the spring of 1993 was his first public exhibition followed by exhibits at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, The University of VA, The Miles Carpenter Folk Art Museum, The Virginia Science Museum, The Virginia Heroes Program, Pine Camp Cultural Center, North Carolina Wesleyan Sisters Gallery and many others. He participated in the Virginia Art Residency program and provided workshops for children in Central and Western Virginia,  St. Helena, South Carolina as well as Island Church and Ambassador Preparatory Academy  in Galveston TX.

Everett has also appeared on the former award winning Nickelodeon show “Gullah Gullah Island with a segment highlighting his art and spontaneous creativity.

Each piece is a true expression of nature for Everett generally does no carving, relying instead on the creature or object that makes its appearance evident in driftwood found on beaches and river banks.  Of late, Everett has started creating sculptures combining multiple pieces of found wood to create pieces like his life sized lion and eagle's head.
